Raju: The boy who almost dropped out forever

Problem: Raju, 14, walked 5 km daily to school. When his father fell sick, his uncle said, “Ab school ka kya fayda… ghar chalana hai.” Raju started washing utensils at a roadside dhaba.
How we helped: A volunteer noticed him scribbling English alphabets on a discarded newspaper. Asha Vatsalya Foundation enrolled him in a community learning program, provided financial support to his family, and helped him rejoin school.
Outcome: Today, Raju dreams of becoming a teacher. Someone saw a student hidden inside a worker.
“Main kabhi school nahi chhodunga. Ab padhai meri ladai hai.” – Raju

Meena: The girl who was told “Padhi likhi ladki se kya hoga?”

Problem: Meena loved studying, but her family had already started looking for a groom at 16. Relatives said, “Zyada padh likh ke kya karegi?” She studied secretly under a dim kerosene lamp.
How we helped: A local outreach program identified her. We counseled her parents, provided a scholarship, and enrolled her in a nearby college.
Outcome: Years later, Meena became the first graduate in her village. Now she teaches other girls and tells them, “Padhai sirf kitaab nahi… zindagi badalti hai.”
“My degree is my voice. No one can silence it now.” – Meena

Laxmi & the slum library

Problem: In a small urban slum, children had never seen a proper book. Laxmi, 12, wanted to read – but there was nothing to read. No books, no space, no support.
How we helped: Asha Vatsalya Foundation set up a small community library in that area – just a room, but filled with dreams.
Outcome: Laxmi became the most regular visitor. Today, she reads stories to younger kids. A reader became a leader.
“Every book I open is a new world. I want to take everyone there.” – Laxmi
